    This month we’ll be hearing from Guild member Ruth Hepburn, who recently spent 6 weeks in Ethiopia working with traditional weavers. After winning a design competition, she was given the opportunity to design a capsule collection of fashion accessories for a German fashion brand in partnership with Sabahar, a successful producer of traditional handwoven textiles in Addis Ababa. She will give us an insight into the design process, the delights and challenges of cross-cultural design, and share some of the stunning traditional weaving techniques that are intrinsic to Ethiopian culture.

    Brendan Gaynor of The Gaynor Homestead, where he and his family raise Rambouillet sheep, bees, corn, and more, will be telling us all about life as Ontario farmer and yarn producer. The Gaynor Homestead is a small-scale, permaculture farm and a registered Ontario producer of high quality spinning wool and purebred livestock from their small flock of Rambouillets.

    The Gathering is an annual fibre festival in Port Hope, Ontario, where many farmers and fibre vendors come to sell their wares, and fibre enthusiasts gather to knit and spin together in a communal space.

    Windows to Creativity’ and ‘Honouring our Past: Envisioning our Future

    The WASOON 2018 conference promises participants the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of fibre arts through workshops, lectures, silent auction and vendors marketplace.

    Keynote Speaker – Deborah Livingston-Lowe, “Canadian Textiles Come Full Circle”, an overview of non-indigenous textile production in Eastern Canada from the 18th century to the current Fibreshed Movement from a handloom weaver’s perspective.

    Opening Reception – Friday evening, Timmins Museum National Exhibition Centre

    Workshops  weaving, spinning, beading, dyeing, felting, sewing, basket making, textile printing, and much more

    This is always a lovely opportunity for spinners to hang out together, learn new skills, and add to the fibre inventory. The theme this year is “2018: A Spinning Odyssey”. Two TGSW members will be teaching on Saturday: Harriet Boon and Julia Lee. Accommodations will be in Essex Hall’s furnished suites. Each suite contains four single lockable bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge and a kitchenette. Information on booking accommodations will be contained in the Spring OHS Newsletter. All attendees are encouraged to bring an item to put into one or more of the seven display categories. More info to come...

    Kawartha Heritage and Maryboro Lodge, in collaboration with the District 7 Ontario Sheep Farmers, present the Sheep to Warm Woollies Festival which will be running simultaneously with the Kawartha Yarn & Fleece Festival and offers great family activities for anyone wanting to learn more about how your wool comes to be! This educational agricultural event will feature live sheep and lambs, a shearing demonstration, guilds of spinners and weavers, as well as children's crafts and activities. There will also be 100% wool items for sale, food vendors and more! The festivities at Maryboro Lodge are 100% free and you can swing on over to their event page to book your tickets in advance!

    The Kawartha Yarn & Fibre Festival is a single day event showcasing local and independent vendors, with a unique mini-market for small businesses designed specifically to help small companies with great products put a spotlight on their unique products, attracting passionate fiber artists of all types. Knitters, crocheters, spinners and felters will all find something perfect for them. There are classes available, and a great refreshment station with lots of yummy treats! Come out and join in the fun!

    This will be our final meeting of the year, and to celebrate we enjoy a dessert pot luck together and have an auction of yarn, fibre and equipment to boost the goodies in your stash as well as raise some money for the Guild.

    Things to bring:

    • Dessert offering (including list of ingredients please)
    • Any yarn/fibre/equipment that you wish to sell in the auction
    • Cash to make your own purchases!
    • As always we will have some time for show and tell, so do bring any of your recent creations to show the group

    The first annual Black Sheep Festival of Contemporary Textile Art is a curated event featuring a makers marketplace, demonstrations, and a weekend workshop series. Black Sheep strives to bring together a diverse range of artists and makers to share knowledge and inspire innovation in the textile arts.

    ​This year the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Central Region Seminar will be hosted by the Etobicoke Handweavers and Spinners Guild in the Toronto suburbs. The event will include a spinning circle, maker spaces, vendors selling fibre, yarn and equipment, demos and opportunities to try weaving in the Guild's fibre studio. Beverages will be available at the Networking Cafe, but please bring your own lunch.
