*2:00 PM Textile Museum, 55 Centre Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M5G 2H5
On Saturday, November 16th there will be a self-guided visit to the Textile Museum’s new exhibition Beyond the Vanishing Maya: Voices of a Land in Resistance. This is the first exhibition of its kind, featuring contemporary Maya artworks curated by Maya curator Diego Ventura Puac-Coyoy. This exhibition aims to break down myths and misconceptions about the Maya, their existence, their art and their culture. By placing different artistic expressions used by contemporary Maya artists, including painting, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, poetry and music on equal footing, we strive to tell a story that celebrate the richness of Maya art and culture while also challenging European hierarchies in art history.
Our visit will happen during the Fall Fundraiser and Fabric Sale, so it will be busier than usual, but there will also be a chance to shop fabric, yarn, and other textile materials.
*The Museum has also kindly extended an invitation to our Guild to join for their early access hour on both days of the sale. Guild members can show their membership at the reception desk to get in between 10-11am. Make sure that you have a copy of your Guild membership card with you.
*Meet in the museum lobby at 1:45 pm, so we can all troop up to the exhibition together.
