Whether we spin or weave, we all have a large inventory of yarns with numerous qualities. Some skeins easily tell us what they want to become, but others don’t communicate so easily. Over Zoom, members will share their unique stashes and work together on project ideas on how best to use our treasures. Members are also encouraged to share lessons learned in their own past destashing endeavours.
We’ll make sure that we also fit in a Show & Tell session at this meeting!
On Saturday, November 16th there will be a self-guided visit to the Textile Museum’s new exhibition Beyond the Vanishing Maya: Voices of a Land in Resistance. This is the first exhibition of its kind, featuring contemporary Maya artworks curated by Maya curator Diego Ventura Puac-Coyoy. This exhibition aims to break down myths and misconceptions about the Maya, their existence, their art and their culture. By placing different artistic expressions used by contemporary Maya artists, including painting, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, poetry and music on equal footing, we strive to tell a story that celebrate the richness of Maya art and culture while also challenging European hierarchies in art history.
Our visit will happen during the Fall Fundraiser and Fabric Sale, so it will be busier than usual, but there will also be a chance to shop fabric, yarn, and other textile materials.
*The Museum has also kindly extended an invitation to our Guild to join for their early access hour on both days of the sale. Guild members can show their membership at the reception desk to get in between 10-11am. Make sure that you have a copy of your Guild membership card with you.
*Meet in the museum lobby at 1:45 pm, so we can all troop up to the exhibition together.

IN THE COMMUNITY
The Guild generally participates in the following Riverdale Farm events , demonstrating fibre processing, spinning, weaving, and other textile skills to the public. After a hiatus during the pandemic, we look forward to resuming these events this Spring.
FAMILY DAY Riverdale Farm is a great place to spend Family Day, with lots of fun activities taking place, including weaving and spinning demonstrations and activities that the whole family can enjoy.
SHEEP CELEBRATION Riverdale Farm opens its doors with the farm’s popular Spring Festival at which Guild members use the fleece shorn from the farm sheep to demonstrate the skills needed to wash the wool, prepare it for spinning, make yarn, dye it, and weave it into cloth. Come and watch the process, from sheep shearing on!
FALL FESTIVALS See the Guild in action on the second weekend in September at the Riverdale Farm Fall Festival, and at the Cabbagetown Festival too!
